Jim Bouton, Western Michigan University ‘59, is remembered as a baseball player and author, but he has had a wide range of success in various fields. Bouton was born on March 8, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, and died on July 10, 2019.
His career as a professional baseball player began in 1959, when he was a free agent for the New York Yankees. He also played for the Seattle Pilots and the Houston Astros. In 1970, just after the the publication of his book Ball Four, the Houston Astros sent him to the minor leagues, where he soon retired. He was known for his pitching skills and knuckleball.
Bouton published four books during his career as an author. His first book, Ball Four, was a bestseller and revealed many unknown details about professional baseball players and life on the road.
