Norman Bailey Snead, Wake Forest University ‘58, was born on July 31, 1939, in Halifax County, Virginia, but grew up in Newport News, Virginia. He was the son of a farmer named Hugh Snead and his wife Louise. Snead attended Wake Forest University, where he was a member of Beta Lambda Chapter. He also played on the Wake Forest University football team, where he garnered national attention.
Snead had a long tenure as a professional football player. Over the course of his career, he played for the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers. He was named to the Pro Bowl on four occasions, in 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1972, the last of which he led the NFL in completion percentage and was second in passer rating.
Following his retirement from professional football, Snead coached at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia. In 1984, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inducted Snead, recognizing his contributions to the sport.
Snead died on January 14, 2024, in Naples, Florida.
